The route, turn by turn

1. 01

   Exit centre · turn left onto Plenty Road

   Plenty Road is four lanes here and carries fast through-traffic. Build to the speed of the lane quickly after merging.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Pulling out into the kerbside lane and dawdling below the limit.

2. 02

   Plenty Road · 60km/h dual carriageway

   Hold the kerbside lane unless overtaking. Tester watches for mirror discipline and stable lane position across painted lane markings.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Hugging the lane line on the right rather than centring in the lane.

3. 03

   Right turn at Settlement Road · arrowed phase

   Wide right-hand turn. Right-turn arrow is medium length — get moving promptly. Receiving carriageway is two lanes.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Slow reaction to the green arrow, losing the phase.

4. 04

   Settlement Road roundabout · 2nd exit

   Single-lane roundabout, moderate traffic. Signal left as you pass the first exit. Maintain consistent speed through the arc.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Forgetting to indicate the exit when continuing straight.

5. 05

   Past La Trobe University · 40km/h school/uni zone

   Speed limit drops near the university campus during teaching periods. Look for the signs — they change with the time of day.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Cruising in at 60km/h and missing the limit change.

6. 06

   Left into residential street · reverse parallel park

   Two-car parallel park bay. Use reference points — A pillar to bumper, wheel turn at 45 degrees. Within 30cm of the kerb.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Over-correcting and ending up nose-out or kerbed.

7. 07

   Three-point turn · quiet residential road

   Wide enough for a clean three-point. Full lock, head checks both ways before each phase. Complete in three movements where space allows.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Not checking blind spot before reversing into the second phase.

8. 08

   Right turn out of residential street · gap selection

   Onto a 60km/h road. Pick a gap that does not force following traffic to brake. Wheels straight while waiting.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Pulling out into a gap too small and causing an oncoming car to brake.

9. 09

   Settlement Road roundabout · 3rd exit (right)

   Approaching the same roundabout from a different angle — this time taking the third exit. Signal right on approach, switch to left after the second exit.

   ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Forgetting to switch the indicator from right to left.

10. 10

    Complex right turn at Plenty Road · staged crossing

    Right turn back onto Plenty Road from a side street. Watch the give-way line — proceed only when both directions are clear.

    ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Inching past the give-way line and committing before the gap is safe.

11. 11

    Plenty Road return leg · lane changes

    Multiple lane changes on the return. Mirror, signal, head check, move — in that order. One lane at a time.

    ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Lane change with signal but no head check.

12. 12

    Return to test centre · parking

    Back into Plenty Road forecourt. Park in the designated bay, straight between the lines, handbrake on, gear in park.

    ⚠ COMMON FAIL: Parking at an angle, one wheel on the line.
