The Bundoora test route, mapped.
VicRoads Bundoora test route — University Hill estate (Graduate, Scholar, Enterprise Drives). Roundabouts, slip lanes, right-turn give-way fails. 36 years coaching.
The route, turn by turn
- 01
Exit centre · onto Graduate Road
Pull out from the customer-service-centre forecourt onto Graduate Road. This is the spine of the University Hill estate — 40 km/h through the immediate pedestrian zone, with foot traffic from the Uni Hill Town Centre opposite.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Rolling out without a head check for pedestrians on the centre footpath.
- 02
Graduate Road · 40 km/h pedestrian/precinct zone
Hold the speed at 40 km/h through the precinct. The examiner watches for speedometer awareness — any drift above the limit, even briefly, is a Critical Driving Error.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Drifting to 50–55 km/h between intersections; in a 40 zone, that is an Immediate Termination Error.
- 03
Roundabout on Graduate Road · multi-exit
University Hill has several roundabouts on its main spine. Signal correctly on approach, give way to traffic already in the roundabout, and signal the exit before leaving.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Forgetting to signal the exit when continuing straight — common single-lane roundabout fail.
- 04
Right turn into Scholar Drive · give way
Right turn from Graduate Road into Scholar Drive. This is the documented #1 fail point at Bundoora — drivers commit to the turn before the opposing lane is genuinely clear.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Failing to give way to oncoming traffic when turning right — the most common Bundoora test failure.
- 05
Scholar Drive · parked cars + pedestrian flow
Scholar Drive runs through the business park with kerbside parked vehicles. During university hours pedestrian traffic picks up. Maintain a one-car-door-width clearance from parked vehicles and scan for opening doors.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Tracking too close to the parked-car line and not having a margin if a door opens.
- 06
Side street · reverse parallel park
The examiner pulls you over and calls a reverse parallel park between two parked vehicles. Use your reference points, finish within 30 cm of the kerb, straight between the cars, handbrake on, gear in park.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Over-correcting on the second turn-in and ending up at an angle to the kerb.
- 07
Quiet side street · three-point turn (where called)
Some routes substitute a three-point turn in a quiet residential side street. Full lock each phase, head checks both ways before reversing, complete in three movements if the street is wide enough.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: No head-check over the right shoulder before reversing into the second phase.
- 08
Re-entry onto Scholar Drive · gap selection
Pulling back into Scholar Drive from a side street after the manoeuvre. Pick a gap large enough that no following or oncoming vehicle has to brake. Wheels straight while waiting.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Pulling out into a marginal gap and forcing a following car to ease off.
- 09
Roundabout onto Enterprise Drive
Enterprise Drive is the third University Hill spine. Approach the roundabout at a steady speed, give way to the right, signal the exit before you leave.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Hesitating at the give-way line when the roundabout is clear, then committing late.
- 10
Enterprise Drive · lane discipline
Enterprise Drive runs through the wider business park. Hold the kerbside lane unless overtaking. Watch for the 40 km/h school zone signs near nearby Norris Bank Primary if your route extends that way during school-zone hours.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Drifting into the right-hand lane without a mirror–signal–head-check sequence.
- 11
Slip lane back toward the centre
Slip lanes — angled left turns onto multi-lane carriageways — are Bundoora’s documented #2 fail point. Build your speed in the slip lane itself and merge into the kerbside lane only when a clean gap exists; do not stop in the slip lane unless you must.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Stopping at the end of the slip lane and pulling out from a standstill into faster-moving traffic.
- 12
Return to centre · park in the bay
Back into the Graduate Road forecourt. Park in the designated bay, straight between the lines, handbrake on, gear in park. The examiner debriefs you in the bay.
⚠ COMMON FAIL: Parking at an angle or finishing with one wheel on the line.
