The route, turn by turn

  1. 01

Exit centre · left onto Coburns Road

Coburns Road carries steady commuter traffic. Build to 60km/h promptly after merging. Mirror, signal, head check — in that order — before pulling out.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Pulling out without an over-shoulder check.

  2. 02

Coburns Road · 60km/h dual carriageway

Two lanes each direction. Hold the kerbside lane unless overtaking. Tester watches for confident lane position and mirror discipline every 8–10 seconds.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Hugging the centre line instead of centring in the lane.

  3. 03

High Street · drop to 50km/h shopping strip

Speed limit drops as you reach the High Street shopping strip. Anticipate parked cars opening doors and pedestrians stepping out near cafés.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Carrying 60km/h into the 50 zone.

  4. 04

Primary school zone · 40km/h during hours

School on the route near Melton South. 40km/h within signed hours. Proactive reduction at the sign — not after the tester points it out.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Not registering the school zone sign at all.

  5. 05

Right turn at signalised intersection · arrowed phase

Protected right-turn arrow. The phase is medium length — get moving promptly when it greens. Receiving carriageway is two lanes; hold the kerbside.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Slow reaction to the green arrow, losing the phase.

  6. 06

    Western Highway on-ramp · merge at 80km/h

Service-road on-ramp onto Western Hwy frontage. Match the speed of through-traffic before merging — do not stop on the merge line.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Stopping on the merge line, then trying to merge from standstill.

  7. 07

Reverse parallel park · residential street

Two-car parallel park between stationary vehicles. Reference points: A-pillar to lead car bumper, full reverse lock at 45 degrees. Within 30cm of the kerb.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Stopping too far forward of the lead car at the start of the manoeuvre.

  8. 08

Three-point turn · cambered residential road

Quiet street with a slight crown. Handbrake on between phases. Full lock both directions. Complete in three movements where space allows.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Rolling backwards on the camber before engaging drive.

  9. 09

    Multi-lane right turn · staged at give-way

Unprotected right turn from a side street onto a 60km/h road. Wheels straight at the line. Pick a gap that does not force oncoming traffic to brake.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Edging past the give-way line before the gap is safe.

  10. 10

Coburns Road return leg · lane changes

Multiple lane changes on the return. Mirror, signal, head check, move — one lane at a time. The tester is watching for the head check, not just the signal.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Lane change with signal but no shoulder check.

  11. 11

Town centre roundabout · 2nd exit

Two-lane roundabout near the town centre. Approach in the correct lane for your exit. Signal left as you pass the prior exit. Hold the lane through the arc.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Approaching in the offside lane for a left exit.

  12. 12

Return to test centre · parking

Back into the Melton service centre car park. Park in the designated bay, straight between the lines, handbrake on, gear in park.

⚠ COMMON FAIL: Engine off before the tester confirms the test is over.
